Leveret Estate Reserve Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir

Vintage 2014

A deep red colour. This wine has aromas of dark cherry and plum together with hints of truffle and roasted chestnut. Subtle oak continues to influence the palate combined with a soft acidity and firm tannins. The palate is silky with dark fruit flavours and the finish is long with the oak supporting the fruit flavours. The wine will benefit from at least a year in bottle.

Winemaking:
This 2014 Pinot noir was sourced exclusively from the Top Pines block of our Riverview vineyard. This block is predominantly clone 10/5 which tends to produce wines with dark, brooding fruit characters rather than the lighter berry aromas of some other Pinot clones.

The fruit was fermented at our Riverview winery with hand plunging. After pressing the wine all went to barrel of which 50% was 1 year old oak. Egg white fining was used. After 9 months in barrel the wine was transported to our Katikati winery where it was bottled in February 2015.

 

 

VINTAGE 2014

“Predominantly 10/5 clone from the ‘Top Pines’ block in the ‘Riverview’ vineyard, fully destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 9 months in approx. 50% 1 y.o. oak. Dark, deep ruby-red colour with some youthful purple hues on rim. The nose is soft and deep with solidly packed aromas of ripe black cherries, dark red berries and plums along with minerally, earthy reduction. Medium to medium-full bodied, the mouthfeel is soft, plush and rich, with stylishly restrained black cherry, berry and plum fruit flavours. Subtle sulphide reduction and earthy nuances are integrated with the fruit. Oaking is balanced and sensitive. Supple tannins and moderate extraction provide a positive, rounded core, and the palate flows with soft underlying acidity and energy. Mineral and reductive elements emerge, combining with the black fruits and carry through to a moderately sustained finish. This is a rich, plush, black fruited Pinot Noir with a soft structure and complexing reduction. Serve with coq au vin and game meat over the next 4-5 years. 17.0+/20 March 2015.”

“The only Hawke’s Bay-grown wine among our top placegetters. It is big, a little unkempt and full of personality. Dark still fruit mingles with savoury elements, oak char also noted. The texture is firm, the finish is long. It’s a wine that needs a sturdy food companion, like a garlicky cassoulet.”
