Nikau Point Reserve Hawke’s Bay Syrah

NP REsv HB Syrah_106689

Vintage 2016

An elegant wine that truly over delivers.  Ripe red fruit layered over vanilla spice and white pepper. The pallet has lovely fruit weight and fine tannins, with vanilla bean and raspberry carrying through a long finish.

“Black-hued red with some depth, and lighter ruby hues on edge.  The bouquet is softly voluminous with lifted white pepper, mint and red liquorice fruit aromas indicating the cooler spectrum of ripeness.  Light-bodied, light and lean flavours of white pepper are entwined with fresh herbs and red berry fruit.  The palate is somewhat astringent with a hard edge from the extraction and elevated acidity.  This has linearity and the wine is carried by the acidity to a slender finish with sweet spices and peppery elements.  Though strong in aromatics, this light, slender and grippy Syrah has white pepper flavours carried by firm tannins and acidity.  Match with pasta, pizza and barbecued food over the next 2-3 years.  Hawke’s Bay Syrah fruit fermented to 12.2% alc., the wine aged 12 months in seasoned oak.”

“Not a big syrah but a very elegant one. No great pepper notes here – instead we get soft ripe plums, gentle tannins and elegant savoury oak. Good drinking at a great price.”
