The Regent Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet

vertical

2013 Vintage

A sublime Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a fine grained structure that adds depth and complexity. The Regent of Tantallon is a limited edition wine of superior quality. It has aromas of coffee, chocolate, black olives and blackcurrant. The palate is well balanced with the rich, dark fruit character backed up by fine oak and tannins.

Winemaking:
2013 was a near perfect year for Bordeaux style reds in Hawkes Bay. Bob Campbell, an eminent New Zealand winewriter, rated this vintage 10/10 – it does not get better than this. Exceptional heat created a long dry season typical of an Indian Summer. This enabled us to hang the fruit for a longer period until super ripe.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from our Hawkes Bay vineyards and were processed at our Riverview Winery. Most of the fruit was hand harvested and gently destemmed into open topped fermenters. Fermentation was conducted at up to 30°C with hand plunging. A few days of extended maceration preceded pressing off and malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in a mix of new and used oak barrels for 18 months.

Cellaring Potential:
This wine will age gracefully for another 8 – 10 years.

2013 Vintage

“Full and still fairly youthful in colour, with a fragrant, fresh bouquet, it is a refined, mouthfilling red, with deep, vibrant blackcurrant/plum flavours, silky tannins, and lots of current-drinking appeal.”
