Our Marlborough Vineyard

Perched on the northern tip of the South Island, Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s main wine producing regions. It is well known for some of the world’s best Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs.

Our vineyard is located in Awatere Valley, the driest, coldest and windiest sub-region of Marlborough. Here, the nights are long and cool which helps support a slow ripening process and adds to the distinctive grape flavours. The area is characterised by fertile soil and the fact that it is not as stony as some other areas of Marlborough. The ample sunshine, cool nights and pristine alpine rivers give it a geographic uniqueness that influences the terroir and makes the wine from this subregion distinctive and highly regarded.

Kuranui Vineyard

Kuranui is located in the Awatere Valley, just south of Blenheim. Kuranui is an evocative name which translates as “great treasure”. It is also the South Island Māori name for the now extinct moa. The vineyard was first established in 2003 with 50 acres planted that year and a further 70 acres planted in 2004. What makes this region unique is the geographically distinctiveness and the influence of the terroir.

Sitting at 259 metres above sea level, this is one of the highest vineyards in our group. It is positioned on north-facing slopes and elevated terraces on the south side 50 metres above the Awatere River on heavy clay, layers of free-draining lime-rich alluvial gravels and stones, and the clay bedrock of impermeable 'papa'. The high number of sunshine, cool nights and pristine alpine rivers make the wine from this subregion distinctive and highly regarded.

Main Grape Varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris
