Elspeth represents our top tier of wines produced from exceptional Hawkes Bay sites – the Gimblett Gravels district for red wines, and the Riverview district for Chardonnay. The fruit is hand-picked and only under the Elspeth label when of exceptional quality. Our winemaking team shares the philosophy of a hands-on, no-expense-spared approach to produce these fine award-winning wines. The range is limited to Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux style reds. The Elspeth tier is named in honour and memory of the original winemaker’s grandmother, Elspeth Preston.Enquire Now
This superb Syrah, from an exceptional vintage, brims with intense flavour and complexity. Displaying flavours of luscious boysenberry, white pepper spice and liquorice, on a beautifully integrated and refined palate. Eminently drinkable now, it will also greatly reward cellaring for longer term enjoyment.
The grapes for this distinguished wine were grown exclusively in our highly regarded Mere Road Vineyard in the celebrated Gimblett Gravels district of Hawkes Bay.
Hand-harvested on 27th March 2018, the grapes were destemmed, retaining whole berries, which were cold soaked for 3 days prior to fermentation. Fermentation proceeded (40% wild) in French integrale barrels, rotated twice daily, and 60% with a selected yeast in an open top fermenter plunged twice daily. Post fermentation, the wines remained on skins for a 9 day alcohol soak, to add structure and refine tannins, before being pressed off and transferred to barrel for 17 months aging in quality French hogsheads (33% new). This superior wine is unfined, and only coarse filtered, retaining its natural complexities and opulence, before bottling on 19 September 2020 under Stelvin screwcap.
