Open That Bottle

It’s Open That Bottle Night every year on February 26 but we know there will be other occasions throughout the year that will deserve the uncorking of something special, something stashed away (whether you did the stashing, or we did it on your behalf).

We checked in with our winemakers to see what they put away that you can present for that special evening, occasion, or event.

Stashed for You
Both these bottles are 2015 vintages that we have available at our Cellar Door and online that come with the advantage of six years of cellaring – no effort of willpower required on your part.

• Leveret Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015
“Gracefully aged and full of ripe cherry and forest floor goodness. It’s great with a duck or lamb dish.”
– Cam Duke, Winemaker, Katikati

• Riverview Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2015
“An opulent option packed with dark berry and mocha flavours, which goes great with steak or a rich, vegetarian lasagne.”
– Cam Duke, Winemaker, Katikati

One to Stash
If you do have some of the aforementioned willpower, then you could plan ahead for 2040 with this suggestion. Stay strong.

• Mills Reef Elspeth One Gimblett Gravels 2020
“Elspeth One is a very special wine that’s only produced in exceptional years. The last one we did was back in 2013. Thus, it is rare and only very small volumes are made. It has a 20+ year cellar potential; although that doesn’t mean it’s not worth drinking a little younger! Enjoy it with slow-cooked lamb shank in red wine and rosemary jus served on mashed potatoes with baked carrots and steamed asparagus.”
– Paul Dawick, Chief Winemaker

No Need to Stash
Some wines are designed to be cellared and others are meant to be opened right now. So, if you like to celebrate the here and now, this option is great for right now – carpe diem!

• Mills Reef Reserve Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2020
“A firm favourite and excellent drinking no matter the season, it’s the comfort food of wine! Serve with pan-fried fish in a caper, butter sauce with a side of grilled zucchini and mashed cauliflower.”
– Paul Dawick, Chief Winemaker
