Wine Review

Complex and enticing with blackberry, vanillin oak, violet and toasted spice notes, it's concentrated and generous with fleshy texture and plenty of fine-grained tannins. Beautifully layered with ripe fruit intensity and spicy/savoury nuances, it's engaging and deliciously long. At its best: now to 2030.

Vineyards and Winemaking

The grapes for this distinguished wine were grown exclusively in our highly regarded Mere Road Vineyard in the celebrated Gimblett Gravels district of Hawkes Bay.

Hand-harvested on 27th March 2018, the grapes were destemmed, retaining whole berries, which were cold soaked for 3 days prior to fermentation. Fermentation proceeded (40% wild) in French integrale barrels, rotated twice daily, and 60% with a selected yeast in an open top fermenter plunged twice daily. Post fermentation, the wines remained on skins for a 9 day alcohol soak, to add structure and refine tannins, before being pressed off and transferred to barrel for 17 months aging in quality French hogsheads (33% new). This superior wine is unfined, and only coarse filtered, retaining its natural complexities and opulence, before bottling on 19 September 2020 under Stelvin screwcap.
