Falconhead Marlborough Pinot Noir 2023

From $18.99

The New Zealand falcon has been a revered guardian of our vineyards for decades. At our Riverview Vineyard on the banks of the Ngaruroro River in Hawke’s Bay, we housed and trained a male and female falcon whose seemingly effortless grace held us rapt for many years.

The only remaining bird of prey endemic to New Zealand helps us with our natural sustainability program by managing pest control operations. To this day we still have a resident falcon who often visits the feeding station we’ve set up as a token of appreciation to this flying celebrity who also graces our country’s $20 bill. It’s worth noting that just one of these bills will get you a nice bottle of Falconhead to take home…

Bright ripe raspberry, black cherry, and subtle forest floor complexity. Beautifully weighted with fine tannins and a long red fruit finish.

Wine Review

All the boxes of varietal expression are ticked with a bouquet of red berry fruits centering on boysenberry then raspberry then a layer of leesy spices from vanilla to clove. A dry wine on the palate with tannins and acidity framing the core fruit flavours that reflect the variety and style. Medium weighted with fine tannins an earthy clay then stone suggestions and mild toasty barrel highlights. Balanced and well made in a ready to drink style. Best from 2025 through 2028.

Vineyards and Winemaking

This wine is from grapes grown in our Kuranui vineyard in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough.

The grapes for this wine were harvested and transported to our winery. The fruit was pressed into stainless steel fermentation vessels and inoculated with a range of yeast strains but principally M2. Following fermentation, the wine was inoculated for Malolactic fermentation and run off to barrel for maturation. The wine spent around 12 months in oak before being blended and tankered to our Katikati winery for finishing and bottling.
