Leveret Estate Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2021

From $21.99

The Leveret brand is a descendant of the award-winning Coniglio range. The word “leveret” means young hare, three of which can be found dancing on the bottle’s label. The ears of the hares connect creating a triangular symbol that was used by the tin merchants of Devon, traders on the Silk Road.

With it’s own sense of history, and coming from an up-standing family, we’re excited to present a premium and reserve option for the Leveret brand.

A fantastic example of Hawkes Bay Syrah with a floral nose of dark berry, violets and black pepper. A well-balanced palate with Black Doris plum and chocolate rounded off with well-integrated oak, combined with deft black cherry and refined tannins provides a lingering finish.
This wine is drinking well now but can be cellared for up to 10 years +.

Wine Review

Savory and reductive aromas of plums, cured meat, white pepper, rubber and wet river stones. The medium-bodied palate has finely integrated tannins and balanced acidity as well as a plush and generous finish. Restrained with some Old World Charm. Drink now.

James Suckling

Fleshy dark fruited bouquet led by baked raspberry and boysenberry, then a smoky toasty wood quality with French oak baking spice suggestions. Medium+ weight, taut and dry wine touches the palate, flavours of dark berries and clove, black currant and vanilla, wood smoke and dry stone earthy highlights. Polished tannins and medium+ acid line frame the fruit perfectly. A ready to drink expression with cellar time ahead if preferred. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2028+.

Vineyards and Winemaking

The grapes were harvested from the Tantallon vineyard and transported to our Riverview winery where they were crushed to open topped stainless steel fermentation vessels and inoculated using Rhone selected yeast strains. The ferments were hand plunged several times per day until dry and then allowed from 2 to 14 days extended maceration. The wine was then pressed off the skins and put to barrel, 25% of which was new, where it was aged for 15 months before blending. The wine was then transported by road tanker to our Katikati winery for final blending and finishing. Bottling was in February 2025.
